Digicel Group, the best value mobile operator in the Caribbean, Central America and Pacific, has acquired Haitian mobile operator, Voila, from its parent company, US-based Trilogy International Partners, for an undisclosed sum.

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, April 2, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Digicel Group, the best value mobile operator in the Caribbean, Central America and Pacific, has acquired Haitian mobile operator, Voila, from its parent company, US-based Trilogy International Partners, for an undisclosed sum. The transaction closed on Friday, March 30, 2012.

The two companies will continue to be run separately.

Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille, facing days of political pressure from the president, sent a resignation letter to President Michel Martelly.

Haiti Prime Minister Garry Conille has resigned from office, giving into political pressure from President Michel Martelly to step down.

Conille sent a letter to Martelly shortly after 10 a.m. Friday, almost an hour before he was supposed to meet with the president and ministers at the National Palace, several sources confirmed.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday met with Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille, who is visiting Washington for talks on his country's post-earthquake reconstruction efforts.

The prime minister told journalists one purpose of the visit was to discuss progress his country has made since the deadly January 2010 quake and issues related to the slow pace of reconstruction.

Hotel Florita, located in the Jacmel region of Haiti, was destroyed in the earthquake, yet was rebuilt by mid-2010 and has been flourishing ever since.  Best Western is planning to open a 105-room Best Western Premier during the third-quarter.  There were 43 hotels in Haiti, totaling 1,674 rooms, as of December 2011, according to data from STR.

The devastating earthquake that struck Haiti during January 2010, followed by a massive cholera outbreak, was not enough to keep the nation’s hoteliers down.  Two years later, many have rebuilt their properties and are working to make the industry stronger than ever.

There were 43 hotels in Haiti, totaling 1,674 rooms, as of December 2011, according to data from STR, parent company of HotelNewsNow.com. Two more are in the in-construction phase, while three properties are in the final planning stage.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Actor Sean Penn has been named ambassador at large for Haiti in recognition of his humanitarian work since the 2010 earthquake. The Hollywood star received the honor from Haitian President Michel Martelly at a special ceremony Tuesday evening at the National Palace.

Martelly thanked Penn for keeping the spotlight on the Caribbean nation.

EU and Haiti sign deal to lengthen rural highway . European Union/Haiti highway project will link Hinche and St. Raphael to Port-au-Prince

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- The Haitian government and European Union have signed an agreement for building a road to connect the capital with the country's second largest city.

The European Union will spend 40.7 million euros ($52.6 million) on a project that will first pave a dirt national highway linking the central towns of Hinche and St. Raphael. It is 27 miles (44-kilometer) long.

 Andresol also announced the intention of building five police stations and new detachments to reinforce security and fight urban violence in Haiti. Now, the Haitian National Police has 10,000 members, although the security work is carried out by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah)

Delta Air Lines Inc. on April 7, 2012 is to launch a weekly flight from Atlanta to Haiti, the first nonstop air service to the country from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in at least two decades. Delta already flies nonstop from New York to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, but that flight is mostly sustained by local demand.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Oprah Winfrey will visit Haiti next week and will be hosted by Haiti's President Michel Joseph Martelly.

On Friday, Martelly tells The Associated Press that he hopes Winfrey will serve as an ambassador for Haiti. He says he would like her to help Haiti get more assistance for rebuilding from the 2010 earthquake that displaced hundreds of thousands of people.
