Actor Sean Penn named Haitian ambassador at large in a special ceremony at the national palace in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Actor Sean Penn has been named ambassador at large for Haiti in recognition of his humanitarian work since the 2010 earthquake. The Hollywood star received the honor from Haitian President Michel Martelly at a special ceremony Tuesday evening at the National Palace.

Martelly thanked Penn for keeping the spotlight on the Caribbean nation.

EU and Haiti sign deal to lengthen rural highway . European Union/Haiti highway project will link Hinche and St. Raphael to Port-au-Prince

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- The Haitian government and European Union have signed an agreement for building a road to connect the capital with the country's second largest city.

The European Union will spend 40.7 million euros ($52.6 million) on a project that will first pave a dirt national highway linking the central towns of Hinche and St. Raphael. It is 27 miles (44-kilometer) long.

It has now been two years since an earthquake tore apart Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, and it’s obvious that there’s widespread dissatisfaction at the excruciatingly slow progress of reconstruction.

But amid all the desperation, there have been some successes, in which the private sector has exercised an important role. Ideally, it would play a much bigger part.

Delta Air Lines Inc. on April 7, 2012 is to launch a weekly flight from Atlanta to Haiti, the first nonstop air service to the country from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in at least two decades. Delta already flies nonstop from New York to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, but that flight is mostly sustained by local demand.

Port-au-Prince, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is developing a project to improve the healthcare infrastructure and raise Haitian residents'' awareness in the Brooklyn neighborhood, in the community of Cite Soleil, in this capital.

  The project, called WASH, consists of personal hygiene and food safety practices, and is part of support for Haiti's national strategy to fight the epidemic of cholera, the website caribbeannewsnow.com reported on Friday.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Wednesday November 30, 2011 – Several significant investments have been announced for the country, coinciding with a two-day conference that brings together government and business officials.

Marriott International has disclosed plans to open a 173-room hotel in 2014 valued at US$45 million - its first-ever in the capital.

Yesterday, LS Cable & Systems, one of the world's largest manufacturers of energy and telecommunications cables, signed an agreement with the government to promote infrastructure development.

"Haitians don't want a gift," Martelly told reporters at a news conference Tuesday. "They want work."

Heineken says it already owned nearly 23 percent of Brasserie Nationale d’Haiti SA, known as Brana. The Dutch company says it sees room for growth in Haiti with the country’s increasing economic and political stability.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Dutch brewer Heineken NV says it will increase its stake in the dominant beer company in Haiti to 95 percent.

Heineken says it already owned nearly 23 percent of Brasserie Nationale d’Haiti SA, known as Brana. The Dutch company says it sees room for growth in Haiti with the country’s increasing economic and political stability.

The deal is expected to be completed next month for undisclosed terms.

Haitian Culture Minister Choiseul Henriquez has died while in Ottawa, Canada on Friday Noevember 12, 2011.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Former journalist and newly appointed Haitian Culture Minister Choiseul Henriquez has died while in Canada. He was 51.  The office of President Michel Martelly said in a statement Saturday night that Henriquez died of a brain hemorrhage Friday while in Ottawa. It said he had suffered from diabetes and hypertension.

Dubbed Kay Pa'm — Haitian Creole for "my own house" — it aims to provide mortgages to first-time homeowners who belong to Haiti's middle class.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Haiti's struggle to rebuild homes for hundreds of thousands of quake victims may be giving the impoverished nation something it has never had: loans to help people buy them. If efforts by international donors and local agencies succeed, at least a few members of Haiti's small middle class will be able for the first time to get a mortgage. Some of the efforts reach even further, offering micro-mortgages for families who make as little as $150 a month.

As one of his first executive acts, Haiti’s new president, Michel Martelly, has asked donor nations to help him re-establish the army that was disbanded by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide 16 years ago. The initial cost: $95 million, which will go, Martelly says, to a starter force of 3,500.

At best, Martelly’s priorities are confused. At worst, they are ominous. He is proposing to spend a lot of money on a militia that Haiti doesn’t need when the country is still in shambles because of the 2010 earthquake. Worse, he is reconstituting an institution that was used, from the 1950s onwards, almost exclusively as a tool of oppression.

PHARMACEUTICAL companies around the globe are donating billions of dollars in free drugs to third world countries grappling with poverty and disease. Abbott Laboratories is taking its philanthropy a step further. The Illinois-based company is donating the time of dozens of workers with expertise in food sciences and engineering, in addition to $6.5 million cash, to build a charitable, self-sustaining nutrition enterprise in Haiti.
