When the quake hit Haiti 18 months ago, Ball's company, Innovative Composites International, was developing lighter, more affordable and air-tight shipping containers. He and his team of engineers quickly saw the opportunity to use the same technology to construct low-cost homes.
Ball thought ICI's storage units could be used to build continuous wall sections that were well-sealed, energy-efficient and could withstand climate conditions in Haiti, particularly hurricanes and earthquakes.
