U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday met with Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille, who is visiting Washington for talks on his country's post-earthquake reconstruction efforts.

Delta Air Lines Inc. on April 7, 2012 is to launch a weekly flight from Atlanta to Haiti, the first nonstop air service to the country from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in at least two decades. Delta already flies nonstop from New York to the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, but that flight is mostly sustained by local demand.

I hadn’t been here since a few months before the 2010 earthquake. Since then, I had been scratching to come back for many reasons, but mostly because my memories of Haiti had nothing to do with the images of desperation and crumbled monuments that we all saw after that catastrophe.

Port-au-Prince, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is developing a project to improve the healthcare infrastructure and raise Haitian residents'' awareness in the Brooklyn neighborhood, in the community of Cite Soleil, in this capital.

  The project, called WASH, consists of personal hygiene and food safety practices, and is part of support for Haiti's national strategy to fight the epidemic of cholera, the website caribbeannewsnow.com reported on Friday.

Marriott International has disclosed plans to open a 173-room hotel in 2014 valued at US$45 million - its first-ever in the capital.

Yesterday, LS Cable & Systems, one of the world's largest manufacturers of energy and telecommunications cables, signed an agreement with the government to promote infrastructure development.

MiCRO is an innovative platform that provides customised reinsurance coverage to help protect lending institutions and their low-income borrowers against losses resulting from natural disasters. The grant agreement provides claims-paying capacity to MiCRO for its Haiti programme via a multi-donor trust fund administered by the CDB and inaugurated in late-September 2011 following an initial contribution of US$1.5 million by DFID.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday, November 10, 2011 – A grant agreement supporting catastrophe microinsurance programmes in Haiti was signed into effect recently to give more security to lending institutions and their low-income borrowers in that disaster-prone country.

The grant was signed at the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) last week between Nicholas Crichlow, corporate secretary for the Microinsurance Catastrophe Risk Organisation SCC (MiCRO) and the CDB’s acting Vice-President (Operations) Tessa Williams-Robertson.

If efforts by international donors and local agencies succeed, at least a few members of Haiti's small middle class will be able for the first time to get a mortgage. Some of the efforts reach even further, offering micro-mortgages for families who make as little as $150 a month.

PHARMACEUTICAL companies around the globe are donating billions of dollars in free drugs to third world countries grappling with poverty and disease. Abbott Laboratories is taking its philanthropy a step further. Haiti Broilers has a team of technical staff and vets working countrywide to sell chicks, pullets, feed and equipment to the farming community, while providing sound advice on proper farming techniques.

 

Work is underway to establish a distribution network through farm stores able to provide a smooth flow of inputs for farmers.

Clinton, who is also co-president of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC) together with Haiti's outgoing Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, was named head of the Presidential Advisory Council for Economic Development and Investment.
